San Lorenzo Nuovo presents the ‘Ideal Vegetal City’ project: village regeneration funded by the PNRR
A project of cultural and social regeneration to enhance San Lorenzo Nuovo and strengthen the village’s appeal through tourism, culture, and sustainability
San Lorenzo Nuovo is embarking on a new path of development with the Ideal Vegetal City project, a cultural and social regeneration program funded by the PNRR that aims to enhance the historical, landscape, and cultural heritage of this Tuscia village.
The project was presented yesterday to residents in the municipal council hall. “The cultural and social regeneration of San Lorenzo Nuovo represents an extraordinary opportunity to redevelop and enhance our town, focusing on inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability,” said Mayor Simona Fabi.
A project for the regeneration of San Lorenzo Nuovo
During the public meeting, engineer Mario Fratini, Head of the Technical Office and Project Manager, outlined the management of the PNRR funds and the main operational deadlines.
Designers Massimiliano Capo and Gianpaolo Serone presented the project guidelines, which aim to transform San Lorenzo Nuovo into a welcoming place of cultural production, open to residents, tourists, artists, and researchers.
The concept of the Ideal Vegetal City dialogues with the town’s urban history, founded in the 18th century as a “real ideal city” after the abandonment of the ancient settlement of San Lorenzo alle Grotte. The project seeks to strengthen this historical and landscape heritage while improving services, infrastructure, and the cultural offer.

Culture, tourism, and new spaces for the community
Among the actions planned within the project are cultural events, festivals, and artist residencies, along with initiatives to enhance the local area and its heritage.
The program also includes:
- the creation of a park in the area surrounding the ruins of the Church of San Giovanni in Val di Lago
- a tourist infopoint in the Vignolo area
- a multisensory thematic trail
- digitalization projects and cultural and educational activities
A central element of the project will be the restoration of the former Multi‑Purpose Center, owned by the Episcopal Curia, which will become a cultural hub featuring a library and accessible coworking space, surrounded by the Ideal Vegetal City park with artistic installations and a botanical garden.
A project to counter the depopulation of small villages
The initiative also aims to counter the depopulation of small Italian villages by enhancing quality of life, the natural heritage, and the new opportunities offered by remote work.
“With the Ideal Vegetal City, we want to strengthen the role of San Lorenzo Nuovo as a place of encounter, sharing, and authentic experiences,” concluded Mayor Simona Fabi, highlighting the village’s strategic position within the Tuscia area, at the crossroads of Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany.
