“Stories on the Move,” from San Lorenzo Nuovo to Lake Bolsena among islands, churches and necropolises

Fourth event in the series of excursions across the area as part of the PNRR “Ideal Green City” project

The fourth event of “Stories on the Move” is here, the trekking program designed to explore the local area through experiential workshops and stories of taste, promoted by the Municipality of San Lorenzo Nuovo as part of the PNRR “Ideal Green City” project.

The initiative is organized by the Comunità Narranti Cultural Association and Four Seasons Natura e Cultura, in collaboration with the Consorzio Camminatori Indipendenti, and offers an opportunity to discover this part of the Alta Tuscia from fresh and unexpected perspectives, through landscape, memory and local flavors.

On Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 9:00 AM, the excursion “Of Islands, Churches and Etruscan Necropolises” will take place, an itinerary through archaeology, faith and scenery that weaves together Etruscan remains, places of worship and lakeside views, traveling through time across the historical layers of the area and its diverse and fascinating natural environments.

Excursion program

Starting from San Lorenzo Nuovo, participants will follow a stretch of the Via Francigena northward until reaching the Maccarino area, where tradition places the ancient Church of Saint Hippolytus.

From here, Lake Bolsena will become the central feature of the landscape, offering the chance to hear stories and legends linked to Martana Island, the smaller and more mysterious of the lake’s two islands. After crossing the Rigo stream, among Etruscan necropolises and the famous Tomb of the Column, the route will arrive at the Church of Madonna di Torano.

The meeting point for departure is Piazza Europa in San Lorenzo Nuovo. The excursion is 8 km long, with an estimated duration of 4 hours (half-day) and an easy difficulty level. Seasonal trekking clothing is recommended.

The nature workshop: wild herbs

The excursion will be enriched by the traveling nature workshop “Wild Herbs: Identification and Uses,” led by pharmacist Francesca Stefanelli, a deep expert in the properties and virtues of plants.

During the route, participants will be guided in discovering the wild herbs found along the itinerary, an area characterized by high biodiversity, with insights into the most widespread species and their uses in folk culture, with particular attention to edible and wild food plants, as well as their applications, including lesser-known ones, both in food and in traditional herbal medicine.

At the end of the morning, there will be a presentation and tasting of the fagiolo secondo bean from Campomoro Bio farm and the extra virgin olive oil from Cinque Sensi farm in San Lorenzo Nuovo.
