“Stories on the Move – Exploring the Soana Woodland in San Lorenzo Nuovo”

Second event in the series of local excursions within the PNRR ‘Ideal Vegetal City’ project
The ‘Stories on the Move’ excursion programme continues with strong public participation. Promoted by the Municipality of San Lorenzo Nuovo as part of the PNRR ‘Ideal Vegetal City’ project, the initiative follows the sold‑out success of the first event and now offers a new experience dedicated to discovering the landscapes of the Alta Tuscia area.
Curated by the Cultural Association Comunità Narranti and Four Seasons Natura e Cultura, in collaboration with the Consorzio Camminatori Indipendenti, the programme adopts an experiential approach that weaves together landscape, memory, and local knowledge.
Excursion in the Soana Woodland: date and route
The second event is scheduled for Sunday, 29 March 2026 at 9:00 a.m., featuring the excursion ‘Soana, the Woodland that Speaks’, a loop itinerary of approximately 7.5 km, lasting 3 hours and 30 minutes, with an easy difficulty level.
The starting point is the parking area in the locality of Santa Maria.
The route crosses fields and pastures along the Giommetta road, alternating between open landscapes and denser woodland sections, until reaching Monte Landro, a site of historical interest linked to Etruscan presence. From there, the trail connects to the ancient Via Francigena and leads into the Soana Woodland, characterised by mixed oak forests and a rich variety of plant species, including hawthorn, blackthorn, maple, and dogwood. The environment is further enriched by small streams, wetland areas, and panoramic views over Lake Bolsena.
Nature Workshop: Learning to Read the Woodland
During the excursion, participants will take part in the travelling workshop ‘Learning to Read the Woodland’, led by the environmental guides of Four Seasons Natura e Cultura. The activity provides tools to interpret the landscape, identify species, and understand natural dynamics.
Experience and community within the Ideal Vegetal City project
At the end of the walk, a meeting with local producers is planned, featuring a presentation of products from Fattorie di Maremma and from Apicoltura Otel Constantin Relu of San Lorenzo Nuovo.
The initiative helps to enhance the area’s resources and promotes a model of sustainable tourism, in line with the objectives of the Ideal Vegetal City project, which aims to strengthen the relationship between community, environment, and cultural heritage.
